The first of Baseline Intelligence's Professional Research Reports on new media, "Online Video Now," turns a spotlight on 20 of the most promising services for distributing professionally generated video content digitally. The report focuses on digital video offerings in four categories:
Streaming to PC – these services stream content directly to a computer. All are supported through in-stream ads with the exception of Netflix Watch Instantly, which is included in a Netflix DVD-rental subscription.
VOD to PC – content can be downloaded to a computer. The content can be either rented or purchased. Rented content must be watched in a defined period of time.
Live Streaming – content is streamed live over the Internet. The content is typically supported through advertising but subscription offerings are starting to emerge.
Set-top box – these devices are connected to a television, and the related services operate with a variety of business models. The content is often higher-quality than other options as consumers have an expectation of higher quality playout on a television.
In addition to a High-level introduction, the report profiles 20 services focused on the most prominent offerings in each of the four categories, which includes everything from Hulu to Boxee. Each profile includes sections on Content, Content Licensors, Investors/Owners, Key Features, Business Model, Revenues, Site Visitors, Key Milestones, Geography, Type of Player, Key News, and an Analysis. Profiles also include charts detailing usage where appropriate.
The report concludes with four matrices comparing the profiled services in key categories as well as a Services to Watch section examining promising new digital video services on the horizon.
From set-top boxes to websites to next generation videogame consoles, this report shows the discerning investor and decision maker where the business of online distribution is headed. Authored by Digital Media Strategist Pam Allison, the report is available as a single issue or as a subscription to two semi-annual issues.
